News:The official wrestling season has begun and is underway.The first tournament was held on December 1st and 2nd at Cape Henry Collegiate School. Malcolm Suiter and Trajahn Johnson went undefeated in the Cape Henry Beach Classic.
The Phantoms have also participated in the Denbigh Classic. 135 pound Trajahn Johnson placed 4th in the Varsity bracket; while Daryl Priest placed 3rd at 145 pounds in the JV bracket.
On December 16 The Phantoms participated in The Oscar Smith High School Tournament against some tough schools. Trajahn Johnson and Malcolm Suiter went undefeated against all seven schools.
After Christmas The Phantom's Varsity and J.V. participated in the Bishop Sullivan Tournament and had seven place winners.3 first place, 2 third place, and 2 fourth place. Trajahn Johnson(130), Sterling Perry(145), and Maurice Hampton(285) dominated the competition to obtain first place. Malcolm"Beast" Suiter(103) and Desmond Barnes(135) only lost one match each to acquire third. James Quick(140) and Ronald "Scrappy" Butler(112) had some tough competition and ended up coming in fourth. The team overall came in third out of thirteen teams. Desmond Barnes boasted a pin in 6 seconds and another in 10. That saturday The Phantoms J.V. got their time to shine and had 3 place winners. Terry Tillery, Shaunice Harris, and Marquis Bryant got 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.
The Phantoms took on Bethel and Warwick high school for their first district match on January 3,2007.They beat Bethel and Warwick for an impressive 2-0 start.
The Phantoms participated in the Night Hawk Duals and obtained first place as a team. They laid waste to Wilson, Booker T. Washington, Norcom, and Churchland High Schools.
The Phantoms took on the Gloucester Dukes and Denbigh Patriots. The Phantoms suffered their first district loss against Gloucester. Coach Ward and his wrestlers bounced back and demolished the Patriots, only allowing 15 points. The Phantoms are 3-1
Coming off a hard practice, the Phantoms hosted the Hampton Crabbers and Heritage Hurricanes. Phoebus beat Heritage and sent them packing. The real test was against the Crabbers. The match was close but grew ever farther from the Phantoms in their loss. The Phantoms are 4-2.
The projected number 1 team in the district, the Menchville Monarchs, visited the haunted house of the Phoebus Phantoms to squeeze in a district match. The score had the biggest margin the Phantoms have seen this year. They wrestled hard but came up short in a loss to the Monarchs. The Phantoms redeemed themselves however when they visited Kecoughtan to wrestle the Warriors and Wildcats. The Warriors fell 54/18 and the Wildcats fell 54/25. The Phantoms finished 6-3. This being the second winning season in Phoebus Phantom history. The first occurring last year (5-4).
Phoebus High School made history again last saturday. Two more Phantoms have become District Champions. Maurice Hampton and Ronald Butler have become the 5th and 6th District Champions in Phoebus History. Malcolm Suiter came in 2nd. Trajahn Johnson and Sterling Perry finished 3rd. Terry Tillery and Jordan Bundick came in 6th. Overall as a team, the Phantoms came in 5th.
