QUESTIONS FOR STUDENTS

What is the Phoebus Swim Team?

The Phoebus Swim Team is a competitive swim team for Phoebus High School.

When does the swim season start/end?

Practice usually starts in mid/late November, with the first meet being in early December.
Swim season usually ends in late January/early February.

Who do I contact if I want to join the Phoebus Swim Team?

Contact either Dean Snyder or Mrs. Burkbuchler...see our contact information for more details.

I have swam before. Is the swim team worth my time?

Yes! Swimming at a varsity level in high school is a highly rewarding and enjoyable experience.

I have not swam before. Is the Phoebus Swim Team the right choice for me?

Yes! Phoebus encourages swimmers of all levels to come out.

I play a spring sport. Will swimming interrupt my practices/conditioning/games?

No! Swimming ends long before spring sports begin.

When and where is swim practice held?

Swim practice is held at Hampton University every day from 3:00 to 5:00.
For directions to Holland Pool at HU, see our directions to pools section.

I don't drive, and my parents can't come drive me every day. How am I supposed to get to Hampton University?

Swimmers usually carpool with juniors and seniors who can drive. Check our roster section and see if you know anyone who could give you a lift.

I am a guy. What do I need to swim?

At practice, swim trunks will do fine to swim in. At meets, however, it is required that all guys have a "swim jammer." They look like biker shorts and are specially designed for competitive swimming. Also, a pair of goggles will be needed at all times. Be sure and buy goggles labeled for competitive swimming, not casual swimming. It is also highly recommended that every member of the team brings their own towel and water bottle, along with anything else they would normally need when swimming in an indoor pool. If you have any additional questions about gear, feel free to ask one of our coaching staff or swimmers for more information.

I am a girl. What do I need to swim?

For practice and meets, girls should have one-piece racing suits...no bikinis and such should be worn to swim events. As with guys, girls will also need a pair of goggles.

What are swim meets like?

Swim meets consist of 22 "events," or variations of different distances and strokes. Each event has a certain number of "heats," or races that take place. For example, the 50-yard freestyle may consist of three heats, each having six lanes. A swimmer may be assigned to swim event 7, heat 2, in lane 3.

QUESTIONS FOR PARENTS

What is Phoebus's policy for being eligible for sports?

Your child must have a completed sports physical before being accepted onto the swim team. A physical is only valid if it has been completed on or after May 1 of the same year. The school regularly offers sports physicals at the school BEFORE EVERY SPORTS SEASON, AT A REDUCED PRICE, so check with our coaches or office to see when the next physical is. There is also nothing wrong with a physical filled out by your doctor.

In addition, it is Hampton City Schools' policy that all of its athletes must maintain a 2.0 GPA in order to participate in sports, nor fail any core subjects. (math, science, english or social studies) For more information on sports eligibility, visit the Hampton City Schools website.

How much of my child's time will being on the swim team take?

The swim team practices after school every day from 3:00 to 5:00, except on meet days. On meet days, the swimmer will be expected to swim at a meet lasting from around 7:00 to 9:00 at night.

Will I be responsible for driving my child to all swim events?

Usually, deals can be worked out between swimmers and parents on getting to and from meets and practice. Have your child check our roster and see if anyone he/she knows already swims for Phoebus.

How much will my child swimming for Phoebus cost?

For boys, jammers can range from $30 to $50. For girls, swimsuits can range from $50+. A decent pair of goggles usually goes from $20 to $30. However, simply being on the team costs no funds whatsoever!

Can I do more for the swim team than simply root for my child?

Yes, parents are highly encouraged to help "time" at swim meets. All one has to do is sit at the end of a lane and start and stop a stopwatch when a swimmer begins and finishes his race. Volunteers are always needed to help time lanes at swim meets.
