The Phoebus High School Swim Team offers students a chance to swim in a competitive environment while promoting fitness, mental health and team spirit. Students of ANY swim level are strongly encouraged to come out and try out for the swim team...which just means showing up and swimming! Swimming is a VARSITY SPORT at Phoebus, which means you will not only compete at a varsity level, receive a letter at the end of the season, and get in great shape, but you will also receive some well-deserved bragging rights.
Swim season generally begins around mid-November and ends in early February, so swimming will not interrupt your spring sports! Practices are held EVERY DAY from 3:00 to 5:00 at Hampton University Pool. For directions, see our "Directions to Pools" section. If you are an underclassmen and in need of a ride to Hampton University, be sure and contact one of our juniors and seniors who drive in our "Roster" section.
Swim meets are held at night during the week at either Hampton University or Midtown pool. When traveling to Midtown, it is Phoebus policy that all students must ride a bus from the school to the meet and back - no exceptions. Parents are encouraged to come to the meets to support their team! Meets usually run from 7:00 to 9:00.
Also, to swim you must have goggles and a swimsuit. Goggles can be purchased at almost any sports outlet, but be sure to get ones labeled for "competitive swimming;" it will make quite a difference in the pool. For boys, swim jammers (they look like biker shorts) can be purchased at most sports outlets; be sure to get them in black. For girls, one-piece racing swimsuits can be bought at the same locations. Again, be sure to get them in black. Swim caps will be provided by Coach Snyder. It is also recommended everyone brings a water bottle to stay hydrated! **For someone who has never swam before, SPEEDO is a great brand to look for while shopping; for the price their quality is great! Also, PLEASE don't be in a hurry to go buy a bunch of stuff - talk to our coaches and swimmers before you go out and buy a bunch of stuff!
If you are interested in swimming or have a question about any of the information provided, contact either Coach Snyder or Mrs. Burchbukler. See our "Contact Information" section for more details.
